How we gain excellence:
Literacy Across the Curriculum– Students will have at least one opportunity to express their thoughts in writing in every class, every day. Students will be exposed to various reading strategies to teach text comprehension. Teachers will be provided with strategies to explicitly teach writing and reading to our students.
Coaching Support- At NEHS, we believe “feedback is a gift”. Feedback allows us to design with our scholars, families and community, and allows a space for us to reflect in an effort to continuously improve as a system and as individuals. In the spirit of continuous improvement, we have adopted a coaching model, not as an evaluative tool, rather a blueprint to foster continuous growth for each individual. Because we place such a high value on feedback, EVERYONE at NEHS receives coaching. Click here to view the NEHS Coaching Framework.
Focus on Habits of Mind-The essential outcome is to develop and expand the dispositions of skillful problem solvers who can apply their learning to an ever-expanding array of challenges not only in commonly taught subjects in school, but also in their communities, in their world and in their lives.
While we are interested in how many answers individuals know, we are even more interested in how they behave when they don’t know—when they are confronted with life’s problems the answers to which are not immediately known. The larger goal is for enhanced performance under challenging conditions that demand strategic reasoning, insightfulness, perseverance, creativity, and craftsmanship to resolve complex problems.
Professional Learning Communities will meet at least once a week to elicit a premier focus on student learning–and only student learning. This will not only drastically improve student achievement, but will also create a culture of interdependence , inspire collective ownership and intelligence, improve school-wide communication, and enhance teacher learning. P.O.W.E.R. Lunch (Plan, Organize, Work, Eat, Relax) - Our mission at North is to create the conditions for our students to become transformational leaders - now and in the future. We seek out cutting-edge solutions to our greatest challenges, pilot promising ideas, and scale strategies that work. POWER Lunch is a research-based, personalized schedule that allows students to engage in daily intervention, remediation, enhancement, and / or enrichment.
POWER Lunch is about student agency. Students make data-driven choices about how to use their time within the POWER framework. It puts accountability for meeting academic and social goals in their hands, and allows them to build strong, lasting relationships with one another and caring adults. Every adult at NEHS plays a critical role in the success of POWER Lunch. Each teacher will host tutorials each week (see assigned POWER blocks). Teachers are responsible for creating meaningful lesson plans. PowerSchedule will begin week 3.
Opportunity Culture- We believe that... Empowering highly effective teachers to continue to impact student achievement in the classroom will help to retain excellent teachers. Excellent teachers should be given opportunities to reach more students and to lead and develop their peers on the job without leaving teaching. Teachers who help their students achieve at high levels should have the opportunity to take on leadership roles in their building if they are ready and willing.
Being a part of the North side Innovation Zone in ECPS will be hard work, but it will pay off for students. Innovation Zone leaders will invest in you by providing exceptional professional development, coaching and classroom support . We want you to become the best educator possible. We believe our support system will help you achieve your professional goals and lead your students to success.
